Espadrilles

I love espadrilles, they are comfortable, versatile and chic and come in a variety of styles - flats, low and high heels. Nina Garcia, Fashion Director at Marie Claire magazine, mention them in her book, The Style Strategy. They are great for spring/summer. I find it works for autum too! I paired it with a light grey jersey, jeans and winter scarf to keep it season appropriate. I bought mine a while ago and I'm still wearing it! Here are a few of my favorite styles for every budget and where to find them:

CALL IT SPRING

I absolutely adore these. Very similar to mine, these go well with dresses and skirts or linen pants and light cotton shirts for spring/summer. For autumn days, pair with a light jersey, jeans and scarf like I did.

SPREE

I found great flats on Spree. I love these with linen pants and shorts. The white polo flat is super chic and is available in black as well. The metallic flats, I think are quite lovely for a casual dinner out with jeans.

NET-A-PORTER

Save the best for last, these are my favorite styles! I must warn you, they have the price to match! They were just too amazing to overlook.

Espadrilles are timeless casual shoes and can really be worn with everything - skirts, dresses, pants, shorts and jeans! Whichever pair you choose, it will be a great buy!

Happy shopping!

3 ways to fit "me time" into your busy schedule

We often take ourselves for granted. It’s easy to get wrapped up in life…if it’s not family responsibilities that we’re taking care of, it’s work and everything else that we do to make the world go round! There never seems to be enough time in the day, especially when it comes to raising kids…however, I believe where there is a will, there is a way! All it takes is a few minutes here and there to feel refreshed. Here are a few things you can squeeze into your busy schedule to show yourself some love:

1.    Morning breather – If you’re a morning person and you are able to wake up 30 minutes earlier, do so and have a great cup of coffee while you browse Pinterest, do your nails or catch up on your favourite blogs. Make sure to prepare for the next day the night before so you don’t have to worry about it during your “me time”. Try getting to bed 30 minutes earlier,
perhaps a challenge, but definitely worth it!

2.    Make the most of your lunch break – We often underestimate the importance of a lunch break. But we shouldn’t, there’s a reason why it is required by law! Prioritise yourself and step out of the office. Organise to see a friend for lunch, browse stores or get that mani or pedi!

3.    Aim to get to bed 30 minutes earlier – Often we buzz around the house and before we know it, it’s after 11pm and we rush off to bed. Try setting an alarm 90 minutes before your preferable bed time. Use the first 30 minutes to finish off anything you were busy with, the second 30 minutes to get ready for bed and the last 30 minutes to wind down with that book that you’ve been waiting forever to get to!

Wardrobe balance - How to save (Part 2)

Call me crazy, but I get a kick out of finding bargains! Nothing makes me more proud than getting  a compliment on an item I only spent 70 bucks on! It proves that style does not have to come with a high price tag. Style to me, is not the latest trend or wearing the most expensive clothing. Style  to me, is about individuality and feeling good in what you wear. My last blog post was about the four "money items" which are good quality staple pieces that deserve some cash. Money items elevate your inexpensive pieces when worn together. Below are some tips on how to recycle/shop for the right inexpensive pieces, like trendy clothing, fun skirts, casual pants, basic vests etc. while keeping to a budget and saving!

1. A wish list - Your first step to saving is making a list of what you need (including what you can afford to pay for it) and to stick to it when shopping. Emphasis on need. It helps curb impulsive buying. Take your time here, a wish list shouldn't push you to get all the items in one month. Buy one piece every month to spread the load and to avoid withdrawals from the mall! Clueless about what you need? Look out for a blog post!

2. Cheaper priced stores - My favorite are factory shops, but my ultimate favorite is Mr Price. If it's not a "money item", really try spend less and stick to your budget. The best part is that you never have to feel guilty about overspending. If you go this route, be sure to follow these three rules when shopping 1. Keep the style simple and classic, no bling 2. Fit, fit, fit 3. Fabric is important, if it feels
like plastic, it is plastic! Stay away! The cheaper priced stores mostly use polyester, so be careful because it can look cheap. Watch out for fabrics that feel a bit coarse or with a slight shine to it. I'm not saying no to polyester, just saying choose it wisely, make sure it doesn't look cheap. Go for chiffon, poly cotton (cotton-polyester blend) or any fabric that has a matt finish and feels relatively soft.

3. Rework items you own - You'll be surprised what you can do with your current wardrobe and a great tailor. The price of a tailor is way cheaper than buying a brand new item, so it's a great saving. Turn outdated baggy jackets into tailored numbers, bootleg jeans into skinnies and straight cut trousers into cigarette pants with cute turnups. The possibilities are endless and you'll have fun playing designer. Tailors are also great to have when finding a sale item you love but not in your size. Remember you can only alter items that are too big for you. Try stick to only one size bigger especially if it's a tailored item like a blazer or trousers. It's challenging to get the right fit if it's miles away from your actual size.

Another way you can revamp items is with fabric dye. Get a professional to do it if you don't have experience. I turned my washed out black skinny jeans into a dark navy skinny jeans that I wore for a few years before I outgrew it sideways lol. I gave my powder blue corduroy trousers (I know, it sounds horrid, don't judge me, it looked cool) new life and dyed it black. It had a great fit and worked really well for a few winters.

4. Vintage stores - These "second time around" stores have absolutely amazing one of a kind items! I guess you need to have a little patience to look through everything, but I would say it's time well spent. What's great nowadays is that when you make a purchase, the store will tailor the items to fit you perfectly.

5. Accessorise - Belts, fun bags and shoes, jewelry, hats and my favorite scarves! Accessories can make the same outfit look totally different! They're pure magic! Let's face it, although accessories can be the cheapest way to add some pizaz to your wardrobe, it can also be the most expensive. It's hard to keep us ladies away from sparkly things! My advice is to remember your budget and if you buy the right accessory, you won't feel like you've settled at all. Again look for simple styles, little/no bling. Rather indulge in colour and pattern!

6. Different different but same - Never buy an item similar to items you already have e.g. buying two black jerseys because the one has a pattern around the cuffs and the other is plain. No...they are still the same thing. Another example are jeans. We all tend to have three pairs of jeans that are very similar, perhaps just a slightly different shade of blue.No...No "twin", "triplet" buys please. You'll probably only end up wearing one of them anyway.

7.And of course, sales, sales, sales! Lookout for Sales. Remember though, it's only a sale item if you don't have to buy 5 more things to make it work in your wardrobe. Make sure that whatever you buy can be worn with items you already have.

Saving money is hard, don't underestimate it. But once you see what you can do on a budget, you'll think twice about spending the extra cash! Would you believe that the outfit in the first photo has a total cost of R310 and the outfit in the second photo has a total cost of R370 at Mr Price?! It may be hard but it can be done! Who knows, the extra money you save could go towards an amazing overseas holiday or a new car! Happy saving and stay stylish!

Wardrobe balance - Where to spend (Part 1)

Staying stylish is an expensive act if you're not sure where to spend and where to save! The key is to balance good quality items with inexpensive ones. I have what I call my "money items", the four items I spend money on and build my wardrobe around - the classic shirt, coats, handbags, and shoes! They have the ability to upscale any outfit and cannot be skimped on. The aim of achieving wardrobe balance is to build your wardrobe with a couple of items in each category and here's how:

1. The classic shirt - Make sure that you have at least one timeless, crisp white shirt. Fit and quality is non-negotiable! White shirts are so fresh for summer and so classic in winter. It can be quite challenging to find the perfect white shirt, but when you do, buy it! A classic black shirt will also take you a long way and it's great to wear at the office or with a fun flirty skirt on evenings out.

2. Coats - If you only have room in your budget for one coat, the trench coat is it! Everyone needs a great trench! It's classy and sexy and can be thrown over virtually anything! If you must have another, like every woman lol invest in a knee length black coat. It's the most versatile length and color and great for any occasion. Ultimately, the style you choose should make you feel and look great!

3. Handbags - It's the hard truth ladies, but one handbag is enough. You have to go neutral (black or tan) if you want it to compliment every outfit. Let's face it, we do really only need one, it's hard enough to find our keys, we don't need more handbags to look for them in! That said, however, we do need a clutch for smarter occasions, but we can totally get away with spending less here!

4. Shoes - A bit more complicated...all women have a private love affair with shoes and it's a bit hard to cut down, I totally get it! So here's where the balance is really important. Do not skimp on these three basics - black heels (open or close toe), black/brown boots and a classic pair of pumps. These are the shoes that would take you from season to season so make sure it's comfortable, timeless and worth the price! Feel free to hide your pennies when buying trendy shoes or casual summer sandals, their life will sadly end with the season.

Remember, when shopping for money items, keep the styles you choose simple and timeless especially with shoes! No chunky or platform heels, no shiny or loud prints. You should be able to wear your money items with anything else in your wardrobe. If you can't, it's probably not a money item. The price would far outweigh the wear and it should probably be left alone. Last but not least, fit fit fit! Make sure all your items have great fit!

The key is to buy a few treasure items and take good care of them. Make sure that you love every item, you're going to have to wear it for a while. This way you can stay stylish season to season without breaking the bank!

Once you have your money items you can use it to compliment more inexpensive pieces and really have fun mixing and matching and creating your own style!

I've always been a sucker for a bargain and I've gotten most of my compliments on items that I spend the least money on! Can't wait to share my tips with you on getting more bang for your buck in my next blog post - Wardrobe balance - How to save (Part 2)!

The Factory on Grant

Being new to Johannesburg, I'm still in the exploration phase.  While roaming around, I stumbled across this cosy gem called The Factory on Grant in Norwood. Many Joburgers may know about it, but for me it was a pleasant surprise! Here are a few of the things you can look forward to!

A great cup of coffee at Vevo Telo. It's known as a lovely bakery and cafe, perfect to fill up your empty tummy!

The Somerset Jane boutique! I was lucky enough to meet the designer herself, Melissa! She has shown at South African Fashion Week and mentioned by Elle magazine SA to design easy and effortless clothing! Pay a visit to her boutique or look out for her designs on Spree (coming soon)!
Connect with her on the Somerset Jane Facebook page or on Twitter @somersetjane and Instagram @somerset_jane.

I was also happy to find a cool textile studio called Mesaw. If you're looking for beautifully unique hand printed textiles and custom made homeware, do check out this studio! I struck it lucky again
and met the owner, Mayuri! Not only does she sell her designs, but she also does printing workshops! So if you're looking for a new creative outlet, consider putting this on your to do list! I definitely am! Catch Mayuri on Facebook and Twitter @mesawstudio and on Instagram @iammesaw.

The last store I want to introduce you to is an inspiring one called, The Factory Shop! It sells amazing accessories for you and your home and all products in the store are strictly, proudly South African! Apart from the amazing candles, designer towels and the most incredible tea leaves, it also stocks some of the most stylish Simon and Mary designer hats! I absolutely want one! Visit their Facebook page and check out their cool items!

The Factory on Grant goes from a cozy afternoon chillout space to a vibey night market every Friday! So pop over tomorrow evening for some shopping and let your hair down at their roof top chill out spot! Check them out on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/thefactoryongrant for more info.

Growing pains

Feeling adventurous? I did in July last year when I decided to chop off my long locks! I've always been obsessed with long hair and clung to mine for dear life! Lord forbid the hairdresser cut more than 1cm at my regular trim! Somehow I took the leap and went for the short do I saw on the series Suits! If you're thinking about going short, here are some tips to ease the growing pains:

1. If you know it's going to be a once-off short do, have it cut with longer lengths on the top and sides. It makes it easier to grow into a bob later on. (Photo grid - top left)

2. Go for a trim less often, perhaps wait 3-4 months (as opposed to the usual 8 weeks) before a trim. When you do go for a trim, keep the length on the tops and sides. (Photo grid - top right)

3. Keep growing it, wait another 3-4 months to trim your hair. At this point, you may start getting annoyed with it, but it will be the perfect length to pin. Experiment and see what you prefer. I wore my fringe in a "poof" and pinned the sides back. (Photo grid - bottom left)

4. Within a few months of pinning, you'll have a mini ponytail (Photo grid - bottom right)! You'll be ecstatic and will probably send pics of it to all of your friends lol At this stage you'll be ready to see your stylist and get that first bob!

Us females have an emotional attachment to our hair. When we've gone through something significant in our lives and we're looking for a change, the first thing we think about is changing our hair! Let's face it, good hair makes us feel brand new and empowers us to take on the world! I must admit, I never miss my long locks but I'm glad I'm at the bob stage. It's basically free flow from here! That said, I'de probably do short short again, it's a breathe of fresh air...

Zebra and leopard

It's no secret that I love animal print *blush*, so to celebrate Fashion Week at the tip of Africa I wore two of my favorite animal prints! Zebra and leopard! It's the easiest print combo to pull off - it's classic and goes well with black. I paired a zebra print blouse (designed and made by me) with a leopard print clutch, my favorite black blazer, black jeans and patent pointy shoes. A more subtle way of pairing the two prints, is to wear a simple black dress with zebra print shoes and leopard print clutch or vice versa. Another subtle way is to wear a belt and shoes of each print with black trousers and black or white blouse. There are many ways to wear these two together, experiment and find the look you love. It's a great way to inject some sass into your wardrobe without overdoing it!

White shoes

Don't be afraid of white shoes! They don't bite! White shoes can be daunting...so I've given you two looks to work with this week! I love pairing it with blazers and did just that at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week! Look 1 Modern Chic - I styled Mpho in a black patterned jumpsuit, white blazer and white sandals with a chunky wooden heel (so in right now). Look 2 Street Style - For myself, I went with a casual printed black vest, leopard print tracksuit pants, white pointy shoe, black blazer (from my clothing label Zeenat Arieff) and gold and silver accessories. White shoes have the potential to add an unexpected chicness to any outfit if worn right! A foolproof way to wear it is with an impeccably tailored suit and simple white tee. When you go white, always go for classic styles in real leather. Stay away from shiny/plasticy looking white shoes...Eeek! It doesn't make any outfit look good...

Humble beginnings

Welcome to my design studio version 1.0! My husband kindly allowed me to take over our dining room, thanks love! The Maxi Skirt

When was the last time you wore a maxi skirt?! What I like about the maxi is that it's really versatile and compliments every figure. Go bohemian and pair it with a flowy top, sandals, layered necklaces and bangles. Alternatively, rock it to work with a crisp white shirt, blazer and heels. I decided to go casual and paired it with a cool vest, soft pink polka dot scarf, vintage leather sandals and accessories. It's such a great piece, it's very comfortable in hot weather (lovely air flow) or on cold days (to hide those long johns!) It's a great buy especially in black, either way it is a forgotten treasure!

Material girl

The past few weeks have been fun! I've been searching far and wide to bring you the best fabrics! It was hard to focus on my view for this collection. There's really so much out there and fabric is just my favorite thing in the world! I finally decided on a simple colour palette of black and white with pops of color and pattern. It compliments the classic styles in the TopMeUp collection and brings a modern but chic look. I can't wait to try out the first round of sample of fabrics! Stay tuned!

Pattern perfect

After being inspired, I have decided on the styles for my new blouse line, TopMeUp! After much deliberation, I finally narrowed it down to simple silhouettes that can fit into your wardrobe and easily be paired with items you own to make great looks! This week I focused on drafting the pattern pieces for each blouse style and thought it would be interesting for you to see what your clothing starts with...an idea, paper, black marker, ruler and maths! Mix it all together and you get the road map for a perfect piece! I enjoy drafting patterns, it makes me feel like an engineer lol I must admit though, my favorite part of the design process is the next step, fabric shopping! So stay tuned for the next sneak peek!

Research and Inspiration

Through knowledge comes inspiration. My inspiration for my new TopMeUp line comes from the history of fashion. I decided to visit a book store and as I browsed I was reminded of the simple but chic style of the 20's 30's and 40's. Apart from deciding that I'm an old soul at heart, I was inspired to make my line about simple, classic easy to wear pieces that can easily fit into your wardrobe. For the young professional that only has 5 minutes to put an outfit together in the morning, this line is for you! Comfortable, easy to wear, classic pieces that can translate from a day in the office to weekend events or casual socializing. Join me in my design process! Read my blog or follow @buttonmefancy on Instagram and Twitter, I'm looking forward to it!

Back to work...in leather

Going back to work? Why not make a statement and wear leather bottoms?! I chose to wear my very own Zeenat Arieff charcoal pencil skirt and paired it with electric blue heels, a white high collar shirt and a charcoal blazer with a touch of hounds tooth. Simple leather bottoms are chic in the office if worn with a classic shirt or blouse and great heels. If you haven't yet jumped on the leather bandwagon, but would like to try it, steer away from "plasticy" looking alternatives as they may not have the right fit and can look cheap. Be sure to look out for leather alternatives that have a matt finish and look very close to the real thing. It may cost a bit more so be sure to buy a classic piece that will last from year to year! My favorite leather classics are pieces with a simple design, clean lines and good fit e.g. pencil skirts, fitted trousers and fitted jackets, maybe even a leather vest if well made. Hope you enjoyed my first post for 2015! Wishing you all a blessed and happy new year!

Picnics and Tulle

Going on a picnic? Wondering what to wear? My clothing items of choice are summer dresses. To me, no picnic is complete without one! On our picnic trip to Boschendal Wine Estate in Cape Town, I wore a tulle bottomed dress, navy in color, with a stripped top. I quite like the nautical feel of the dress, reminds me of ships and sailors! I loooove picnics, one of my favorite things to do in the summer! So go on! Frock up and get those picnic blankets and baskets out!

Check out this DIY tulle skirt tutorial and get creative http://www.cottonandcurls.com/2012/12/diy-tulle-skirt-tutorial/

Something old

Found myself in Nelson Mandela Square today at an the Antique Fair. The items on display were amazing! I've always had a love for that "something old", like the blouse that I'm wearing. It has a vintage feel with rose detail. I bought it ages ago and rediscovered it in my wardrobe. Lucky me! I paired it with turquoise jewelry and kept the rest of the look simple with leather pumps and dark washed skinny jeans. Have a look at your wardrobe and try out things that you haven't worn in ages and breathe new life into them! If it doesn't work anymore remember to share it with those less fortunate.  This post is dedicated to Madiba, although we miss him dearly, we will never forget his memory and all he stood for... "Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom." Nelson Mandela. I am proud to be African.

Color your bottoms

I absolutely love bright colored pants! No summer is complete without it! It's so versatile and adds immediate interest to your outfit. Today I paired my cerise pink pants with a black and cream top and blazer from my label Zeenat Arieff. When wearing bright pants, remember to keep the rest of your look simple with with black/white/cream. You could, however, add more zest with color blocking or a bright patterned blouse or shoes. If you do chose bright pattern, try chose a pattern that compliments the color of your pants. If you fear color pants go for darker shades and wear it with a longer length or peplum blouse, but don't miss out! Color those bottoms!

Open day at Truly Truly Sewing School
